I have been busy, busy reading lots of books this summer, mostly bible reading, some reading for a class I am taking on understanding depression and how to overcome it, (I am not depressed, but I know of several people who are, hence the understand part), a few knitting books, and several works of fiction. I used to read novels for fun, but find that I read them too fast and a few months later I couldn't even remember what the story was about. I have decided to slow it down quite a bit and read lots of books more slowly instead of one book really fast. We will see how it goes, and if my retention is any better this way. I have also noticed that if I don't practice something regularly, I tend to forget how to do it. For example, this blog. Try as I might, when I learn something new in the world of html, and appy it, if I don't use what I have learned consistently, out the window of my mind it goes, and I am unable to retrieve it. I have to go "learn" it all over again. I suppose the same would be true for a lot of other things too, like short row heels, (which at this time I do not use), cables, (which I only tried once and don't think I ever want to try to do again at this point), etc, etc. Why can't it just be like learning to ride a bike? Once you learn, you never forget? Hmmm?

There are so many reasons why we americans should be celebrating this nations birth today. Unfortunately, as with many holidays, it has just become another day off of work, an extra vacation day, and in this case, a day to blow things up. Not many will reflect on exactly why we celebrate today, but a few will. They will remember why our forefathers came here, the struggles they endured, the reasons, the dreams, the hopes and prayers they originally had for this country. This nation was founded on the principles of freedom, morality, and a strong belief in God. Yes, God. I am not ashamed to tell you I believe. I wonder what those men would think of our nation today...

So its been a while since I was here last, summer is a busy busy time, and I spend a lot of it outdoors. But I will update this next week, and until then, I found a Feast to hold you over.
Appetizer Name a funny habit you have. I go to sleep by rubbing my feet at the end of my bed.
Soup If you could instantly know how to play a musical instrument, which one would you pick? It would have to be the guitar.
Salad How long is your hair? Short to medium length.
Main Course When was the last time you forgave someone, and who was it? My children, everyday.
Dessert What is your favorite kitchen appliance?
The microwave, of course!

Why is it that sometimes (often) I just cannot wrap my brain around certain things, and try as I might, I just don't "get" it? I mean, I am a fairly intelligent person: not a rocket scientist by any stretch of the imagination, but definitely not an idiot savant, either. I just wish I understood a little bit better how my brain processes information, and how something can be an utter mystery to me at one point, and make complete sense later. Is it that I am "learning" the concept, training my brain so to speak to de-construct and then rebuild the information in a fashion that makes sense to me? For instance I can read a pattern and just not understand exactly what it is I am supposed to do, and yet, when I try to do something on my own, designing something similar, making mistakes and correcting them as I go, I can completely and irrevocably understand the concept, and then the original idea just makes sense. Is this what they mean by having a "light bulb" moment? Maybe originally I just don't want to try to grasp it, and I have a deep seated need to work it out in my own way, or maybe, at this particular moment, I am just thinking way too hard...

I happened to catch the tail end of a Hancock Fabrics store closing sale, and even though the store was very picked over and practically empty, I was able to procure a few knitterly items, and some Dylon warm water dye packages. I had purchased some yarn to dye while on vacation, and so I was chomping at the bit to try my hand at dying. I must say, it was probably one of the most enjoyable things I have done in a long time. (Probably because I was the only one home at the time, and there was no one to interrupt me.)
I soaked my yarn in a vinegar/water solution for about an hour, and took my time preparing the dye in squeeze bottles. Once the yarn had bloomed, I squeezed out the excess water and laid the skein on a sheet of plastic. I then proceeded to drip different colors around the skein, in a pattern. One skein was done with color repeats very close together, and the other with wider strips of color. I allowed the yarn to soak up the dye, and used a basting brush to push the dye gently into the strands. After letting it sit for approximately 20 minutes, (it didn't take long) I laid an old towel over the yarn and gently soaked up any excess dye. I then rinsed the yarn and hung it to dry. I love the colors, and can't wait to do it again!

I was searching the interweb the other night when I happened upon a blog where the author knitterbunny was having a contest. Of course I had to comment, seeing as she was from my old neighborhood, and alas I won some yarn! Beautiful looking Fearless Fibers merino/alpaca in the Duck Season colorway. I can't wait to get my chubby little fingers on it. Yay me!

A Few More Finished Objects

I finished the socks knit with the Hand Jive Nature's Palette in Odd Duck #1. These came in 50 gram skeins, and even though the lot numbers were the same, there is a noticeable difference between the 2 socks. The sock on the left is somewhat paler and the colors are less defined. Oh well, I love the colors anyway.

I wanted to make a little sweater for our Shih Tsu, Samson, but I couldn't find any really good free patterns I could easily understand, so I made this up as I went along. I didn't take any notes, so I am not sure I could duplicate this even if I wanted too. Like most dogs Sam wouldn't cooperate long enough for me to snap a picture, so a little friend is standing in for him.

I received the yarn I won from the contest over on Jens blog, it is 100% merino superwash, in a very pretty colorway Underwater Gardens, with a nice twist to the yarn. Thanks Jen!
WhatNot Yarn from Union Center Knits in the Wildflowers colorway. I have wanted this color for a long time, and was glad when I came across it at Wool Girl.
2 cakes of yarn from Thank Ewe, Blue Spruce and Citrus in 75% superwash 25% nylon blend. I couldn't wait to start a sock with the Blue Spruce. Very soft!
And finally a skein from RubySapphire Yarns, in the Nia colorway; I love the muted tones of this, and will probably knit this one up next. I just have to find the right pattern.

So yesterday I had oral surgery to remove a broken tooth, clean out an abcess and then received 4 stitches, so I am taking it easy this weekend, not planning on doing much, just resting and catching up on a bunch of shows on Tivo that I missed because of being gone for 2 weeks. Hope to post on some sock goodness as soon as I receive several skeins of yarn I ordered.
School for the kids ended Wednesday, so hopefully they don't get on my nerves too much these next couple of days. Give me strength...

Owl Be Missing You, I Hope
EASTERN SCREECH OWL
About a month or so ago, Husband and Son were coming home from work, (they work 2nd shift) and Husband hit this owl as it swooped down in front of the truck. The owl was unconscious, so Son wrapped it in a jacket and they took it to the police station. It was closed, so they dialed 911 from the lobby, and the operator called Raptor Rescue. The owl started to revive, and Son was a bit freaked out by the head spinning and such, so he wrapped it tighter and they put it in a box when they got home. A volunteer from Raptor Rescue came and picked it up the following day, took some information and said they would call to let us know how it was doing. As it turns out, last week they called and said the owl was fine, it only had a mild concussion, and did Husband want to release it back into the neighborhood? Of course, he jumped at the chance and he and Son picked it up in the afternoon and set it free that evening when they got home from work. Teen, Tween and I were still on our vacation so we missed out. Such the Lucky Ducks. Hopefully it will stay clear of trucks from now on. I was looking at this picture, and admiring its feathers, thinking, now wouldn't that make a lovely colorway for some yummy sock yarn?
