Free Sock Pattern

Rambling Rows Socks
©Danna Lynn Muetze-Lynam 2007 KNITSTIKS

This pattern is recommended for those who have already knit socks, and are comfortable with basic sock structure.  These socks are knit top down.  This is my first sock pattern.  I was a bit ambitious in my design, and would change a few things if I knit them again, but I still love the way they turned out.

I am just giving the very basics in this pattern; you will use your favorite cast on, heel, and toe decreasing and closing methods.  I will provide the pattern rows, chart and basic instructions.

I knit these socks using a set of 5 size 3US (3.25mm) double pointed needles and Cervinia Calzetteria fingering weight yarn in Denim Heather.  You can use any of your favorite 100g fingering weight/sock yarn as the pattern "draws in" somewhat.  Use the needle size that will give you the gauge that works best for you. (Size 2s will make a firm fabric)

I like my leg/ankle somewhat shorter, so I did 4 pattern repeats, ending after row 1.  You may add more pattern repeats as desired, but remember you may need more yarn (end with row 1 of pattern before you begin heel and toe treatment).

I used a (Slip 1 knit 1 on the right side, purl back across) heel flap (measuring just about 2.5 inches) and then picked up 20 Sts (I have a high instep) on each side for the gusset decreases (I then proceeded by decreasing every other row, back down to a total of 16 sts on each of the needles)

Knitting  Abbreviations

St=stitch

Tbl=knit through back loop

K=knit

P=purl

Tog=together

YO=yarn over

SSK=slip 1st St as if to K, slip 2nd St as if to K, K these 2 St Tog

Directions

CO 64 stitches over 4 dpns.  (You will have 16 St on each needle.)

Join yarn, being careful not to twist stitches, using your preferred ribbing.

(I did the ribbing using the twisted rib; K1 Tbl, P1 for 10 rows)

Pattern Rows

  1. K3, K2Tog, YO, K2, P2, K2, YO, SSK, K3

  1. K7, P2, K7, (and subsequent even rows)

  1. K1, K2Tog, YO, K1, P1, K2Tog, YO, P2, YO, SSK, P1, K1, YO, SSK, K1

  1. As row 2

  1. K2, K2Tog, YO, P1, YO, K2Tog, P2, SSK, YO, P1, YO, SSK, K2

  1. As row 2

  1. As row 3

  1. As row 2

Pattern Chart

The pattern is worked down the instep and top of the foot, while the bottom of the foot is knit.  When the foot reaches desired length, (minus your usual toe decreasing) begin your toe decreases, using you favorite method.  I alternate between decreasing (knit to last 3 sts on needle 1, K2tog, K1 / K1, SSK on needle 2 and so on) and not decreasing 3 or 4 times, and then decrease every round until there are 5 stitches on each needle.  I then use the 3 needle bind off, and weave in all loose ends.  Make second sock.

Brown Bagging It!

I so loved knitting the first bag, I decided to use up the leftover yarn and knit this funky bohemian looking bag.  Only problem is I cannot decide what kind of handles I want for it, so it sits unfinished.  But every so often it whispers my name, calling me-calling me, soon I will be able to answer it back...

Mittens

Here are a quick pair of mittens I knit up for myself using Crystal Palace Taos in the colorway Mesa.  I have to say, I really didn't like this yarn at all, I had so many breaks while I was knitting with it, it started to become laughable.  The only thing that kept me sane was the fact it was 100% wool, and I could use spit splicing to fix it.  You just have to love the fact that spit really is good for something.  I most likely will felt them for Tween.

Duplicate Stitching-Love It!

Here is my pride and joy so far this year. Yes I love to knit socks.  I wish I could knit socks all the time.  But...someone who shall remain nameless, (my husband) gave me some Cascade Ecological Wool for Christmas, and rather then exchange it for sock yarn, I decided to use it and knit this bag.  Who know he could do something so marvelous without even knowing it?  I used a circular needle to knit the bag, and some Panda Woolbale for the duplicate stitching, and VOILA.  The pattern for the duplicate stitch can be found HERE.  I used the chart as is, but added my own extra stitches around it.  Felting to come.

Finished

So I finished my Rambling Rows Socks, unforunately I cannot find my notes for the pattern, (I fear they may have accidentally been disposed of).  If I come across them I shall post them.

More knitting

There really isn't much else to do but knit when it is so cold outside, and I have definitely been doing that.  I knit a pair of Cookie's Monkey socks, but didn't take a pic before I sent them to Eldest in Indiana. They were too big for me, since I used a needle size up. So then I got busy knitting the following...

Here are the Monkey Socks again, by CookieA, only this time I think I am going to use a different heel on it.  I rather enjoy dpn's, and like to do 2 at a time using 2 sets. The yarn is yarn I ordered sometime ago from Smileys Yarn.

These are socks using some of the same brand of yarn from Smileys, only this is my own pattern.  I wanted to see if I could write a pattern, chart it, and follow it on the 2nd sock.  So far so good, although there are some things I would do differently if I make this sock again.  But it is mine, and I love it.  I call it Rambling Rows.

OH! BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!!

Ok, so I woke up this morning, and the temp was 9 below, with the wind chill it felt like -16 or something.  The worst of it is that isn't even as cold as it is supposed to get in the next couple of days.  I do know when I was living in Wisconsin, for the better part of my life I must add, it did get cold, very very cold, but in Nebraska there is so much more wind and that's where for me, it gets me to my very core.  Good thing I am not planning on going anywhere this week- end.  Just plan on knitting, watching movies, and of course, watching Peyton Manning and the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS win the Super Bowl!!

A break from knitting

Not like I really want to take a break, but I didn't knit so much this past weekend. Instead I accomplished some knitting related crafts.

I made a bag for my projects using a jean skirt that didn't fit my Teen and some remnant fabric. I also made a matching case to hold my double pointed knitting needles.
